Science cabaret, hands-on-labs and social media

Prof. Dr. Helmut Jungwirth

Helmut Jungwirth obtained his PhD in microbiology from the University of Graz. Following research fellowships at the University of Tübingen (as an Erwin Schrödinger Fellow) and the Medical University of Vienna, he completed his habilitation in molecular biology in 2009.

Since 2015, he has been a member of the award-winning science cabaret group Science Busters. In 2016, he was appointed as Austria’s first full professor of science communication.

Research Area

Helmut Jungwirth is Scientific Director of the Mitmachlabore Graz and founded its first Mitmachlabor, the Open Lab Graz, at the University of Graz in 2008. He has personally led more than 100 courses for school classes. Together with the Open Lab Graz team, he has co-authored several scientific publications, including the following:

 

(1) Wissenschaftsreflexion medizinischer Themen im Kontext von Gesundheitsbildung (2025). Elvira Schmidt, Julia Arnold, Heide Beranek-Knauer, Simon Blauza, Lucas Eder, Benedikt Heuckmann, Helmut Jungwirth, Hildrun Walter, Albert Zeyer und Kerstin Kremer. Since 2015, Helmut Jungwirth has been a member of the award-winning science cabaret Science Busters and has already performed in more than 200 national and international stage shows. Together with linguist Lisa Korner, he authored the first scientific publication on the Science Busters.

For five years, Helmut Jungwirth has been running the science account @letsdogabout.science on Instagram, which has more than 10,000 followers, and in doing so, he actively takes on the role of a communicator in social media.
